The concept of "extending the classroom" is based on Marshall McLuhan's ideas about technologies as extensions of the human body. Technology changes our understanding of space, what we can see and here, how far we can project our voice, what we can feel, what environments we can experience, and so on.

Classroom technologies likewise change the shape of the classroom, where we learn, what we can learn, what we can hear and see, who can hear us, and so on. The classroom is not so much the physical space of a rectangular prism, but a logical space.
